A Parallel Monetary System, Run by Households
Indian households are sitting on roughly 25,000 tonnes of gold — worth close to $2.4 trillion, per the World Gold Council's widely cited estimate. Other analysts put the number higher (Morgan Stanley has estimated 34,600 tonnes), but even the conservative figure is staggering enough to build an argument on.
Now compare it to a number almost nobody puts next to it: the Reserve Bank of India — the actual central bank — holds about 880 tonnes of gold. Indian households are sitting on roughly 28 times what their own central bank holds.
By some estimates, Indian households alone hold more gold than the combined official reserves of the world's top 10 central banks put together — the US, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, China and the rest, added up, still fall short.
That's not a financial statistic. That's a parallel monetary system — run by households, not central bankers — and nobody talks about it that way.
