Yields Hit a 2002 High, Foreign Selling Shifts Gear, and the Losing Streak Reaches Eight
Nifty fell 3.1% to 22,421.95 in a four-day week — an eighth straight weekly loss and the longest streak since 2001 — as foreign investors sold nearly ₹35,000 crore and US bond yields touched their highest since 2002. Then the news turned: softer US inflation on Wednesday, then a weak jobs report and a G7 oil release on Friday — the last two while India was shut for Gandhi Jayanti.

- Markets. Nifty fell 3.1% and the Sensex 2.7%, an eighth straight weekly loss and the longest run since 2001. Nifty fell on all four trading days and ended at its lowest close in six months.
- Money flows. Foreign investors sold ₹34,966 crore in four sessions. Domestic institutions bought ₹33,455 crore — but for once, that didn't fully cover the selling.
- Bonds and the Fed. The US 10-year yield touched 5.34% on Thursday, its highest since 2002. Then softer inflation and a weak jobs report pulled the odds of an October Fed hike down from about 70% to roughly 14%.
- Oil. Brent jumped after Trump's rejection of Iran's plan, dipped below $100 midweek, spiked on China's fuel-export halt, and ended flat at $102.25 after the G7 agreed to release 100 million barrels.
- Next. Most economists polled expect the RBI to raise rates on Wednesday, October 7, for the first time since 2023.
Eight in a Row — and This Time Every Day Was Red
Last week one Thursday did the damage. This week Nifty fell on all four trading days
Nifty 50, weekly change, by week ending. Down about 8.7% in all since August 7.
| Date | Nifty 50 | Change | What Drove It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri, 25 Sep | 23,140.50 | Ref. | Prior week's close |

| Thu, 1 Oct | 22,421.95 | −0.88% | Auto stocks slump on weak September sales |

Monday set the tone. With Trump's weekend rejection of Iran's peace plan pushing oil higher, Nifty fell 1.56% and the Sensex lost 1,124 points; only three of Nifty's fifty stocks rose. The rest of the week was a grind: smaller losses on Tuesday's NSE monthly expiry day and Wednesday, then a 0.88% fall on Thursday led by autos. The Nifty Auto index dropped 3.5% after September sales disappointed, with Bajaj Auto down 7.6% as its domestic sales fell 9% — an awkward signal just ahead of the festive season. IT was the exception, rising 2.2% on Thursday after softer US inflation data.
For the week, Nifty lost 718.55 points, or 3.1%, and the Sensex 1,986 points, or 2.7%, to 71,909.70. Both have now fallen eight weeks running — the longest streak since 2001 — and Nifty sits about 15% below its 52-week high. India VIX, the market's fear gauge, rose from about 12.2 to 14.4.
Eight weeks have now taken about 8.7% off Nifty, and this week's fall was faster than the slow slide before it. SIP investors are still buying more units at lower prices; the risk is greatest for money you'll need within a year or two.
